How does Clindacin Lotion work?

Clindamycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the ribosomal 50S subunit.

Side Effects of Clindacin Lotion

May cause adverse effects such as vaginitis, headaches, dizziness, gastrointestinal symptoms (heartburn, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), dermatological symptoms (rash, exanthema), and hypersensitivity reactions like urticaria.

Quick Suggestions:

• Apply a thin layer on clean, dry, unbroken skin affected by acne.
• Avoid sun exposure; use sunscreen regularly.
• For external use only. Wash and dry the affected area before applying a thin layer of the lotion.
• Avoid contact with eyes, nose, or mouth. Rinse with water if accidental contact occurs.
• It may take several weeks for improvement. Do not stop using it as soon as symptoms lessen.
• Inform your doctor about any bowel issues, antibiotic-related bloody diarrhea, or other skin medications.
• Consult if pregnant or breastfeeding.

Indication

• Clindacin Lotion is an antibiotic used to treat acne, targeting the bacteria causing pimples on the face, chest, or back.
• Also prescribed for skin conditions like rosacea, periorificial dermatitis, folliculitis, stasis, chronic lymphedema, familial pemphigus, and dermal ulcers.

Pharmacology

• Antibiotic Properties: Clindamycin is a lincosamide antibiotic effective against microorganisms susceptible to it.
• Mechanism of Action: Binds to the 50s subunit of the bacterial ribosome, preventing the initiation of protein synthesis.
• Spectrum: Effective against gram-positive cocci (Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococci, Pneumococci) and gram-negative anaerobic bacteria.

Dosage & Administration of Clindacin Lotion

1. Gently wash the face or affected area with warm water or soap.
2. After the skin is completely dried (approximately 30 minutes later), apply a thin film of Clindamycin lotion to the entire affected area twice daily.
3. Avoid washing the applied area within 3 hours.
4. A noticeable improvement is usually seen after about 6 weeks, with 8 to 12 weeks of treatment for maximum benefit.

Interaction

• May enhance neuromuscular blocking agents.
• Antagonizes effects of parasympathomimetics.
• Competitively inhibits the effects of certain antibiotics.
• May affect coagulation tests when used with warfarin or similar drugs.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to clindamycin.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Safety during pregnancy is uncertain. Use caution during nursing as it is not known if Clindamycin is eliminated in breast milk after topical application.
